Team USA’s medals from Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be insured by Liberty Mutual

March 07, 2016 - As a 104-year-old company built on the promise to help people protect what they cherish most, Liberty Mutual Insurance understands that an Olympic or Paralympic medal is the ultimate reward for athletes who have dedicated their lives to their sport.  As a result, the USOC is working with Liberty Mutual to insure each gold, silver or bronze medal won by U.S. Olympic and Paralympic athletes competing in the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games (in addition to those who participated in the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Games for Team USA).  This program reflects Liberty Mutual Insurance’s commitment to protect their customers’ possessions and stand with them by providing comfort, security and support in the event of a loss.

“Liberty Mutual Insurance is in the business of helping our customers worry less as they face life’s inevitable challenges,” said Melanie Foley, Liberty Mutual Insurance executive vice president, and chief talent and enterprise services officer.  “For Team USA athletes, a medal is the ultimate reward for their hard work and training, and they deserve to have peace of mind that should anything happen to it, there is someone standing with them.”

Team USA is hoping to repeat its position atop the Olympic and Paralympic Games medal table in Rio, and will strive to best the 374 total medals awarded to Team USA at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.  The process to replace a lost or stolen Olympic or Paralympic medal requires the athlete to file a request through the U.S. Olympic Committee.  Through this insurance policy with the U.S. Olympic Committee, Liberty Mutual Insurance will ensure 2016 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic athletes are not financially responsible to replace their treasured prizes, just as the company is doing for members of Team USA who earned medals in Sochi.

“One of the great things about winning an Olympic medal is being able to share it with family, friends and Team USA fans across the country,” said U.S. Olympic gold medalist in Judo (London 2012) Kayla Harrison. “Traveling with my medal can be unnerving at times because it’s something I would never want to lose, but knowing that Liberty Mutual Insurance is standing with me puts me at ease as I head into Rio trying to defend my Olympic title.”

Support for Team USA on the “Road to Rio”

Liberty Mutual Insurance is proud to be the presenting sponsor of the USOC’s Road to Rio Tour, which will travel to eight cities leading up to and through the Rio Games.  Visitors to the Liberty Mutual Medal Pavilion at the 2016 Road to Rio Tour stops across the country are able to learn about great U.S. Olympic and Paralympic medal-winning moments, meet U.S. Olympians and Paralympians, and participate in medal-themed activities.

Liberty Mutual extends its support of U.S. athletes by also serving as a partner of several national governing bodies, including ASA/USA Softball, USRowing, U.S. Soccer Federation, US Youth Soccer, USA Hockey, USA Volleyball, USA Water Polo, USA Wheelchair Rugby and USA Wrestling.

Additional details related to Liberty Mutual’s 2016 U.S. Olympic marketing campaign will be announced in the near future.
