The USS Constitution Museum is pleased to announce that Boston-based Liberty Mutual Insurance will sponsor all public school visits to the museum from Sept. 2012 to June 2015, thus allowing for free field trips for students of all ages, in and outside of Massachusetts.  Public schools that participate in the Liberty Mutual Insurance-sponsored field trips will have access to a range of fun and educational experiences, using the historic naval vessel, USS Constitution and its crew as a lens for understanding the War of 1812. Through programs geared toward various grade levels -- from pre-school through 12th grade -- students can explore the excitement of "shipboard life" and the concept that ordinary people, working together towards a common goal, can have a direct and powerful impact on the nation's future.

"We invite everyone to visit us as we commemorate the Bicentennial of the War of 1812, to reflect upon the service and sacrifice of sailors 200 years ago in our interactive galleries, designed to engage guests of all ages," said Anne Grimes Rand, President, USS Constitution Museum.  "I can think of no better way to understand the challenges of life at sea, and to recognize how those events continue to shape our national identity and culture today, than by immersing yourself in those experiences. At the USS Constitution Museum, we encourage guests not just to read here, but to do. This is a particularly effective method to use with school groups, for while some learn by reading, some by listening, we all learn by doing.  We are thrilled to be able to help address the needs of our school and share the singular resources we have developed over time with our public schools, free of charge, thanks to the support and vision of Liberty Mutual Insurance, during this special Bicentennial period."

The USS Constitution Museum recently opened its newest interactive exhibit, the "Old Ironsides 1812 Discovery Center," which features computer activities simulating shipboard life, interactive lessons about the War of 1812 and its major events, a large map highlighting personal stories that impact America to this day, and a feedback wall enabling visitor to deliver their own messages and hold conversations through written word and artistic representation.

"By keeping alive the inspiring story of ‘Old Ironsides' and its crew, the USS Constitution Museum has developed a range of innovative programs that teach our children about teamwork and service," said David Long, President and Chief Executive Officer, Liberty Mutual Insurance. "As a Boston-based company that advocates these same values, we feel the best way to support the Constitution's legacy is to ensure students can experience these life lessons, first hand."
