The Liberty Mutual Climate Transition Center has co-published a paper with Swiss Re titled, “Wildfire Risk Reduction in a Changing Climate,” examining the growing challenges posed by wildfires amid climate change, ecosystem shifts and expanding human settlements. This paper explores the relationship of the climate-nature nexus to wildfire and identifies ways to integrate nature-positive wildfire mitigation at the landscape scale to support ecosystems, reduce risk and promote long-term insurability.
The paper underscores the importance of a coordinated, all-of society approach that considers natural landscape management, community planning, and active fire defenses. It also emphasizes the pivotal role the insurance sector plays in this collaborative effort, including risk identification, stakeholder education and advocacy around key risk mitigation activities, and bridging research with practical mitigation efforts to build greater resilience against evolving wildfire risks.
