August 12, 2015 - The Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety has been awarded the inaugural Human Factors and Ergonomics Prize from the International Ergonomics Association (IEA). The award is presented to an organization that has made significant contributions to research and development and the application of knowledge in the field of human factors and ergonomics.
Founded in 1954, the Research Institute is internationally recognized for its innovative and impactful ergonomics and related research in the areas of driving safety, work-related injuries, falls and other injuries in the built environment, and disability and recovery. Annually, the Research Institute’s scientific output exceeds 50 top tier journal articles and 40 presentations at national and international conferences. It is committed to peer-reviewed publication and shares its findings with the broader scientific, academic, and professional communities.
IEA President Professor Eric Min-yang Wang presented the Human Factors and Ergonomics Prize to Research Institute Director Y. Ian Noy, Ph.D. at the IEA Triennial Congress this week in Melbourne, Australia. “The IEA is extremely pleased that the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety has been named as the recipient of the IEA Human Factors and Ergonomics Prize. Over its 60 year history, Liberty Mutual has contributed significantly to our professional body of knowledge through its outstanding research. Taken together, the individual and collective contributions of this organization embody the spirit of this award.”
Dr. Noy offered perspective on the Research Institute’s compendium of work in the field of ergonomics. “We are indebted to the many scientists who have contributed to the Institute’s work over the past 60 years. Successive generations of Institute scientists have built upon earlier discoveries and innovations to generate knowledge to help people live safer, more secure lives. We are very proud to receive this honor in recognition of our research accomplishments.”
Examples of recent research includes examining risks and benefits of telematics and autonomous vehicles, understanding onset and consequences of fatigue, developing models of the shoulder to complement traditional overexertion injuries, characterizing where, why and how falls occur, advancing the construct and utility of safety climate measures, understanding the links between demographic trends and safety outcomes, examining safety as an emergent property of sociotechnical systems, and addressing barriers to return to work function.
