Established in 2001 as the Quantitative Analysis Unit, the Center for Injury Epidemiology (CIE), was renamed in 2007 to better reflect the nature and scope of its research. The CIE conducts original epidemiological research into risk factors for occupational injury and studies the burden of workplace injury.
CIE research scientists analyze multiple sources of injury data and conduct epidemiological field studies to better determine the causes and distribution of work-related injuries. The CIE also identifies and develops promising design and analytical methods and serves as a statistical and epidemiologic resource partner to the other Institute Centers. CIE is also responsible for the Liberty Mutual Workplace Safety Index, which identifies the direct economic cost of the leading causes of serious workplace injury.
