Chien-Chi (Max) Chang, Ph.D., C.P.E.

Liberty Mutual Research Institute Research Scientist Chien-Chi (Max) Chang, Ph.D., C.P.E. Dr. Chang is a senior research scientist with the Center for Physical Ergonomics at the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety. His occupational biomechanics research focuses on the dynamics of human movement. Since joining the Research Institute in 1997, he has conducted research in a variety of areas ranging from manual materials handling and slips and falls to tool design and anthropometric measurements. His projects involve lower back compressive force assessment for manual lifting tasks, optimum manual lifting patterns prediction, biomechanical assessment of floor slipperiness, and fall prevention including falls from ladders and scaffolds. The research helps to identify and reduce the potential risks associated with manual lifting tasks as well as slip and fall incidents.

His early work at the Research Institute includes the prototype development of Liberty Mutual’s VidLiTeCTM(Video-Based Lifting Technique Coding) system. This research-based, field application provides for real-time, quantifiable, non-invasive biomechanical analysis of the dynamic features of manual lifting tasks.

Dr. Chang has published in a variety of peer-reviewed journals, including Applied Ergonomics, the Journal of Biomechanics, Ergonomics, the International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics, and Safety Science. He is a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and the International Society of Biomechanics. He also serves on the International Ergonomics Association Slips, Trips, and Falls technical committee and the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation research committee.

Dr. Chang earned his B.S. in mechanical engineering from the National Sun Yat-Sen University in Taiwan, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Utah.
