As an organization dedicated to helping people live safer more secure lives, we respond to catastrophic events annually. In summer 2009, southern California wildfires impacted communities throughout Los Angeles. The Liberty Lends a Hand team responded to this devastating event. The group cleaned up a historic ranger station, which had sat unused for decades in Angeles National Forest’s San Gabriel Canyon, that will now serve as a meeting site and home base for the 200 local volunteers who help the U.S. Forest Service. We also repotted more than 100 pine tree saplings that will be used to replenish the forest; assembled more than 450 food packages for homebound individuals; and worked at the L.A. Regional Food Bank. "Community Service on college campuses has grown steadily over the past five years as more and more students look for ways to help people in need," said Maura Quinn, University Relations Program Manager for Liberty Mutual Group. "The Community Project gives students another outlet through which they can put their unstoppable energy and enthusiasm to work." This year, we are offering 10 students the opportunity to join our Liberty Lends a Hand team once again in the Angeles National Forest. We are excited at the opportunity to build upon last year’s work and continue our efforts with this sustainable project in the forest and community.
