December 1997, Shanghai Medical University, now the Fudan University School of Public Health, joined the Research Institute in an agreement to collaborate on safety and health research with the goal to increase the understanding of occupational injury in China. In 2000, Liberty Mutual and Fudan formalized the relationship by establishing the Liberty Mutual SafeWork Center and appointing Professor You-xin Liang, M.D., as Director.
Several cooperative efforts are currently underway with the Liberty Mutual SafeWork Centre at Fudan, including an investigation of injury and illness record-keeping and surveillance systems and studies of acute hand trauma and low back pain in Shanghai. Studies are also in progress to examine manual materials handling in the Chinese workplace.
