The Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety is the only peer-reviewed research facility for occupational safety and health in the US, funded by an insurance company.  Our private funding allows researchers to focus entirely on original research in an environment that promotes leadership and accomplishment.

Located in a brand-new state-of-the-art, 95,000 square foot facility in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, just outside Boston, the Research Institute collaborates with some of the finest academic research organizations in the nation.  While creative thinking and independence is critical, our researchers also work in multi-disciplinary teams whose efforts have been recognized by scientific awards and published in a host of scientific and professional journals.
The atmosphere and environment of the Research Institute is collegial and offers employees a rewarding work-life balance. They regularly interact with Liberty Mutual’s top management, meet foreign visitors, and participate in professional forums.

Most importantly, our researchers play a critical role in Liberty Mutual’s creed “to help people live safer more secure lives” by investigating the cause of injuries at home, at work, and on the road.   By publishing our research in peer reviewed scientific journals, trade magazines, and technical publications, we transfer our work “From Research to Reality To assist our policyholders control injury and losses.   Our findings also appear in technical bulletins, tip sheets published in Liberty Mutual’s web site and newsletter, and in on-going training sessions.

Our researchers come from a variety of backgrounds including chemistry, biochemistry, public health, physiology, human factors, health, math, and statistics – 75% hold PhDs.
