In 2001, 2.7 million drivers were
involved in disabling injury crashes. In many of these crashes,
skidding was a contributing factor. Skids often happen when drivers
are trying to avoid crashing into sudden obstacles, such as a
deer that unexpectedly runs across the road, or when they attempt
an abrupt maneuver or try to stop quickly. Knowing how to control
their vehicle under adverse driving conditions can be the difference
between life or death.
Everyday driving skills like stepping on the gas pedal, hitting
the brakes and turning the wheel become remarkably different during
a skid. Knowing how to use these same skills differently when
a vehicle skids out of control doesn’t come naturally—it’s
something that must be learned.
That was the idea behind the creation of Liberty Mutual’s
Skid School in 1964. The Skid School teaches driver trainers who
train commercial vehicle drivers how to control their vehicles
during skids and in other emergency situations.
Now incorporating Liberty Mutual’s
award-winning Decision Driving™ Program, the Skid School
was the first of its kind in the insurance industry. To date,
thousands of trainers have gone through the program, sharing what
they’ve learned with other drivers so they can better control
their vehicles during skids, as well as under normal driving conditions.
